How Much Does It Cost to Build an MVP App?
One of the most common questions we get from founders is some version of: “How much will it cost to build my app?” The honest answer is that it depends, but not in the frustrating way agencies usually mean. There are a small number of factors that drive cost dramatically, and once you understand them you can scope an MVP that gets you to market without burning your runway.
What is an MVP and what should it cost?
An MVP, Minimum Viable Product, is the simplest working version of your app that lets you test your core idea with real users. The key word is minimum. Not minimum effort, but minimum scope: only the features that are essential to test the one thing you most need to validate.
At Vamp Creatives, our MVPs start from £2,500 and typically land between £2,500 and £8,000 depending on scope. Here is what determines where you fall on that range.
The 4 biggest cost drivers for an MVP
1. Number of distinct user roles
An app with one type of user (e.g. a consumer app) is significantly cheaper than one with two or three (e.g. admin, coach, and athlete). Each additional role means separate flows, separate permissions, and separate screens, roughly 30 to 50% more development time per role.
MVP advice: Launch with one user type. Add others when you have validated the core experience.
2. Whether you need payments
A Stripe integration adds real complexity, not just a payment form, but webhook handlers, subscription lifecycle management, database synchronisation, and a customer portal. A robust Stripe integration adds roughly £1,000 to £2,000 to a project.
MVP advice: If your core hypothesis is “will users pay for this?” then yes, include payments. If your core hypothesis is “will users use this?” then consider launching free and adding payments once you have validation.
3. Mobile vs web
A web app is almost always cheaper and faster to build than a native mobile app. A responsive web app works on mobile and desktop, ships faster, and can still be installed as a PWA (Progressive Web App) on phones. Native iOS and Android apps each roughly double your build time.
MVP advice: Build a responsive web app first. Ship a native mobile app when you have proven demand and have the budget for it.
4. Custom design vs a design system
A fully custom, pixel-perfect UI design takes time. For an MVP, using a design system like shadcn/ui or Tailwind components gives you a polished, professional look at a fraction of the cost of custom design. Most users care far more about whether the app works than whether the button radius is unique.
MVP advice: Use a design system for your MVP. Invest in custom design when you are building your launch-ready product.
Typical MVP cost breakdown
| What you are building | Typical cost | Timeline |
|---|---|---|
| Simple idea validation prototype (Figma) | From £500 | 1 to 2 weeks |
| Basic functional MVP, one user type, no payments | £2,500 to £4,000 | 2 to 3 weeks |
| MVP with Stripe payments | £4,000 to £6,000 | 3 to 4 weeks |
| Launch-ready product, Stripe, Firebase, admin dashboard | £5,000 to £10,000 | 4 to 6 weeks |
What about no-code tools like Bubble or Webflow?
No-code tools can get you to a prototype quickly, and for very simple apps they can be a valid choice. But they come with real trade-offs: vendor lock-in, performance limitations, and, critically , limits on what you can build. Stripe webhook handling, custom Firebase integrations, and production-grade auth all hit walls with no-code tools eventually.
If you are validating an idea for the first time, a no-code prototype might be your fastest path. But if you are building something you expect to scale, you will almost certainly rebuild it in code within 12 months. We see it regularly.
How to get an accurate quote for your MVP
The best way to get an accurate cost for your MVP is a short scoping call, usually 30 to 45 minutes. In that conversation we will:
- Understand your core user flows and what you are trying to validate
- Identify which features are essential vs nice-to-have
- Recommend the right scope to get to validation quickly
- Give you a fixed-price quote with a clear timeline
We price by project, not by the hour, so you always know what you are paying before we start.
